Going to buy a new tablet? This should not be missed
Written By Sven van der Kemp
These days, it’s hard to imagine a construction site without a tablet. You use it for project handoffs, inspections, construction drawings, and documenting defects.
Are you planning to purchase new tablets for your construction company? If so, it’s wise to carefully consider the features and accessories that are truly important in practice.
What should you look for when choosing a tablet?
Screen size
The right screen size depends on what you’ll be using the tablet for.
Do you work a lot with 2D or 3D drawings? Or do you fill out detailed handover reports? Then a screen of at least 10 inches is often more comfortable. You have a better overview, and documents are easier to read.
Operating system
At STA Software, we prefer iPads (iOS).
iPads are user-friendly, run smoothly, and are easy for different team members to use. Additionally, Apple devices sync easily with each other via iCloud, making files and data quickly available across multiple devices.
Android tablets can of course also be used, but in practice we find that iPads often perform more reliably on the construction site.
Camera and flash
On the construction site or during a handover, you don’t always work in ideal lighting conditions.
A good camera with a flash is therefore important. This allows you to take clear photos of defects or inspection points even in dark areas.
Clear photos ensure that reports remain organized and prevent misunderstandings later on.
SIM card and mobile internet
Make sure the tablet supports a SIM card.
Wi-Fi isn’t always available on the construction site. With mobile internet, you stay connected everywhere and always work with the most up-to-date data.
This prevents duplicate inspection points and ensures that changes are saved immediately.
What accessories are useful?
A construction site puts a lot of strain on equipment. Good protection and useful accessories therefore make a real difference.
Protective case
A sturdy protective case prevents a lot of damage.
When choosing a case, look for:
drop protection;
protection against dust and sand;
weather resistance;
a good fit for your tablet model.
It’s best to avoid using a universal case. A case made specifically for your tablet often offers better protection.
Carrying strap
A carrying strap is a simple accessory that offers a lot of convenience in practice.
It frees up your hands more quickly and reduces the chance of your tablet falling. This is especially handy during inspections or deliveries.
Be sure to check how the carrying strap attaches. Some cases only support a thin cord, while sturdier attachments often work better.
Car charger
Do you spend a lot of time traveling between projects or construction sites? Then a car charger is very handy.
This way, you can charge the tablet on the go and avoid running out of battery during a recording or inspection.
