Looking for a new tablet for the construction site? You can't go wrong with this one

It’s hard to imagine a construction site without a tablet these days. You use it for project handoffs, inspections, construction drawings, and documenting defects. Are you planning to purchase new tablets for your construction company? If so, don’t just focus on the price—pay special attention to the features and accessories that make a real difference in the field.

What should you look for when choosing a tablet?

Screen size

The right screen size depends on the tasks you’ll be using the tablet for.

Do you work a lot with 2D or 3D drawings, or do you fill out detailed reports? If so, you should opt for a screen that’s at least 10 inches. This provides a better overview and makes drawings, documents, and forms easier to read.

Operating System

At STA Software, we prefer an iPad running iOS. iPads are user-friendly, run smoothly, and are easy for different team members to use.

In addition, files and settings can be easily shared between devices via Apple services.

Android tablets can also be used with STA. In practice, however, we find that iPads are often a stable and user-friendly choice for work on the construction site.

Camera and Flash

During a handover or inspection, you don’t always work under ideal lighting conditions. Therefore, choose a tablet with a good camera and flash.

This way, you can take clear photos of defects and inspection points even in dark areas. Clear photos make reports easier to understand and help prevent misunderstandings later on.

SIM Card and Mobile Internet

Preferably choose a tablet that supports a SIM card or eSIM. This is because a reliable Wi-Fi connection isn’t always available on the construction site.

With mobile internet, you can sync data immediately as soon as you have coverage. This allows you to work with up-to-date information and reduces the risk of duplicate inspection points.

Battery Life

Long battery life is important when you’re using the tablet for a full workday. Therefore, pay attention to the battery capacity and keep in mind that features such as the camera, GPS, and mobile internet consume extra power.

What accessories are useful?

A construction site puts a lot of strain on equipment. Good protection and practical accessories extend the life of your tablet and make daily use easier.

Protective Case

A sturdy protective case helps prevent damage from drops, dust, and dirt. When choosing a case, look for:

  • good drop protection;

  • protection against dust and sand;

  • weather resistance;

  • a secure grip;

  • a good fit for your tablet model.

It’s best to avoid using a universal case. A case made specifically for your tablet fits better and usually offers more protection.

Carrying Strap

A carrying strap frees up your hands more quickly while you’re working. It also reduces the chance of dropping the tablet. This is especially useful during inspections and handoffs.

Check in advance how to attach the carrying strap to the protective case. Some cases only support a thin cord, while a sturdy attachment is often more comfortable and safer.

Car charger

Do you spend a lot of time traveling between projects or construction sites? If so, be sure to bring a suitable car charger.

This allows you to charge the tablet on the go and prevents you from running out of battery during a survey or inspection.
